A Haunted House and Other Stories

A Haunted House and Other Stories, 2021
“WHATEVER hour you woke there was a door shutting. From room to room they went, hand in hand, lifting here, opening there, making sure— a ghostly couple.”
— from A Haunted House by Virginia Woolf, 1921
Like Virginia Woolf's short story, this series is and is not a ghost story. I made these photographs after a year of isolation during a dark night of the soul, an enhanced awareness and painful shedding of previous conceptual frameworks of identity, relationships, and belief systems that once allowed me to construct meaning in my life. An abandoned mansion in my neighborhood became a passage into a new world as I explored the edges of my reality and unconsciousness during long afternoon walks. The memories, experiences, and emotions injected into this place seemed to transcend the flow of time, providing a space to transition into a deeper perception of life while moving through struggle, loss, connection, love, and acceptance.
